As a medical doctor, it is my duty to evaluate the situation with as much data as I can gather and as much expertise as I have and as much experience as I have to determine whether or not the wish of the patient is medically justified.
When I was little, my parents really only wanted me to be a scientist or a doctor; they had never even heard of law school. I think even these days if you were to tell your mother you want to be a fashion designer, or an artist or a writer, a lot of Asian parents would be alarmed because they don’t think that’s a secure career.
In Kenya, I met wonderful girls; girls who wanted to help their communities. I was with them in their school, listening to their dreams. They still have hope. They want to be doctor and teachers and engineers.
A doctor can only treat patients. A doctor can only help the people who are shot or who are injured. But a politician can stop people from injuries. A politician can take a step so that no person is scared tomorrow.
Anytime you interfere with a natural process, you’re playing God. God determines what happens naturally. That means when a person’s ill, he shouldn’t go to a doctor because he’s asking for interference with God’s will. But of course, patients can’t think that way.
The more ignorant, reckless and thoughtless a doctor is, the higher his reputation soars even amongst powerful princes.
My mother took great relish in introducing me as ‘This is my son – he’s a doctor but not the kind that helps people.’
If you’re taking an antidepressant, it’s working, and you’re not experiencing side effects, go on taking it. But if it’s not working, or not working well enough, or if you have side effects you don’t like, talk to your doctor about an alternative approach.
